Established in 1982, Perishable Distributors of Iowa (PDI) provides a distribution system that supplies quality perishable products. PDI has achieved a Platinum certification through the Zero Waste Council for its 98.3% diversion rate of waste from landfills, incinerators and the environment. Today, PDI is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hy-Vee Inc., a supermarket chain with sales of more than $9 billion and 240 retail locations in eight Midwestern states.
In 2018, PDI facility management began investigating solutions to their “end-of-life” roof assembly. The original building sections covered a cold storage environment with R60 levels of insulation and considerable electrical conduit attached to the metal deck. PDI entertained multiple proposals from local roofing contractors. WindSmart developed a proposal for a longer lasting assembly. The design provided thicker thermoplastic membrane and enhanced waterproofing techniques for PDI ammonia piping. Even with such quality enhancements, the WindSmart system was proposed and installed for a significantly lower cost.
WindSmart system can be configured to provide a superior, long-lasting roof that can be installed more quickly. The PDI project was installed without disrupting any daily operations while recycling all the existing roof insulation in place. On large open roofs, the WindSmart system is the most cost-effective way to achieve a higher performing roof assembly.
The new roof assembly was designed and installed to achieve:
