Founded in 1910 and headquartered in Golden, Colorado, CoorsTek, is a family owned and operated global manufacturer of engineered ceramics. With more than 30 facilities across three continents, five million square feet in manufacturing space, and more than 6,000 team members.
In 2021, CoorsTek began the process of looking for solutions to reroof their Golden Colorado facilities. The first phase building included a building with two existing roofs already in place. Based on IBC codes, CoorsTek was told that coatings or complete tear off were their only options. CoorsTek felt that a new single ply membrane with long-term warranty would be better than a coating solution. But, tearing off the existing roofs risked potential disruption to their daily production and sending all the perfectly good insulation to the land fill did not meet CoorsTek’s sustainability goals.
One of the contractors CoorsTek spoke with was a WindSmart Approved Applicator. They provide an option for a more cost effective WindSmart System. The WindSmart system would allow CoorsTek to reskin the roof with a new membrane system secured with a WindSmart venting system. By working together with the local building code official and a structural engineer, WindSmart and the Applicator were able to easily gain the approval for a 3rd roof recover. The contractor also applied WindSmart enhanced wind uplift details to meet Golden Colorado’s elevated (150 MPH) wind speed requirements.
The new roof assembly was designed and installed to achieve:
